What happens if they counter Open the Vaults? Or Maelstrom Pulse a couple of Borderposts?

Seems like it might be a Combo deck that is so slow sometimes Aggro gets to kill it too?

Not that it isn't lovely when you /do/ go off.
er you play 2 Fieldmist Borderpost and 1 Mistvein Borderpost... what are the chances of you drawing both UW ones and getting Pulse'd out?

decks that could counter OtV can't really afford to just wait for that, you just hardcast Architects and Hulks and kill them that way. its not like they can block with Celestial Colonnade when you run Spreading Seas and Tectonic Edge. i haven't lost a match to another control deck with this yet.

Interesting. So the only thing it really fears is graveyard removal or fast beatdown?
It's still a difficult matchup for the OtV player though. Your opponent will have removal for any threat you decide to play the real way, and you probably don't have the luxury of sitting waiting to get to 8 mana so you have Negate backup when your opponent's Jace is ticking up. But you could Oring that. . .

Bleh, I'm not sure how it would go - it seems like it would be a control vs control mirror but you have the advantage of being able to resolve an instant gamewinner.

How do you play around Day of Judgment?

I'm not sure what all this new love for Open the Vaults means for the enchantment-based Vaults deck I've been playing recently. It probably now makes it unplayable since casting Open the Vaults will lose me the game instead of putting me massively ahead. Plus, more people will be hating on the graveyard now. Bad times....
you don't really need to play around mass removal that much. like, take the chapin deck. they basically can't kill you because they can never attack with Colonnade and their Jaces get O-Ringed.

one thing i will say about the deck though is that you really get destroyed by fast red/boros decks. like i played in an 8man at the end of last week and my first round opponent played turn1 mountain goblin guide. i was like welp nice to know i've just lost 6 tix. your best draw against fast red decks is basically

turn 1 cycle a guy
turn 2 JtN one of their guys
turn 3 capsule/o-ring/cycle/anything
turn 4 DoJ/break capsule+JtN
turn 5 sphinx discarding 1+ filigree angel
turn 6 open the vaults

if you get this draw then you win, pretty much. Filigree is just such a beating against any deck which cares about life totals. like, a "bad" filigree in this deck will still gain you like 12 life. Most filigrees will gain you at least 20. If an aggro deck gets a slow draw and you can discard multiple filigree angels its so ridiculous.

i have to say though that for the last few days i've played against a ton of jank decks on modo. people seem to be trying out some terrible stuff [i played against a Nihil Stone deck... thanks for helping me discard my artifacts!]. in particular, lots of people seem to be playing Valakut decks online [though that is a pretty good matchup for the deck].

One deck that is cropping up occasionally which has really impressed me is the white weenie deck with Stoneforge Mystic and Adventuring Gear. Like, the deck is SO vulnerable to day of judgment but against other creature decks all of its guys just end up HUGE. like, i had a guy play Ranger of Eos and search up a couple of Kor Duelist against me when he had previously stoneforge'd for Gear and it was a colossal beating.
