Magic: the Gathering in the UK

So I have a Thraben Sentry in play as a 2/2 (not transformed).  He attacks me with a 2/2 flyer so I cast Spidery Grasp turning it into a 4/6 reach and block the flyer.  Damage resolves.  He then casts Dead Weight on my guy making him a 2/4 with 2 damage (still during his turn).  It hits my turn, my guy turns back to a 2/2 and dies as a result of the dead weight.  In my second main phase I case Woodland Sleuth but don't get the Morbid trigger.  Is this something to do with it being a state-based effect that my guy has 0 toughness, so he doesn't actually "die" and I don't get the trigger?

And if so is this the same if someone just randomly casts dead weight on their turn and kill a creature.  Do they not get the trigger either?  Is dead weight morbid-proof?
Is this modo?  Could it be a bug?
Your guy dies at the clean up phase of that turn so it dies not at your turn but the turn before (State base checks will happen everytime priority is passed).  That's why when Woodland Sleuth enter the battlefield, no Morbid was trigger.

so my creature loses it's +2/+4 in the cleanup phase of the previous turn?

and yes Tom, this is MODO.

All the damage and temporary P/T effects disappear at the same time in the cleanup step. But the  dead weight is static, so it dies before the turn ends.

Yes. All power/toughness and/or temporary characteristic settings all finish in the cleanup phase.

The cleanup phase is part of the End Phase, and actually occurs before the End Step (where triggers and discards due to hand limits happen).

I don't think the Cleanup Phase exists as a step in the MODO turn structure that you can put a stop on, but if you had a stop in your opponents end step (which is common) then you would have seen your guy hit the graveyard then.

Ok, I never knew this!  Thanks for clearing it up.
IIRC there isnt a stop because like the untap step, noone gets priority in the cleanup phase
