So Ross, Kieran, Andy and myself were discussing the idea of organising a New-Old-Boys draft i.e. those of us who aren't old enough, and (somewhat) lacking the gut mass to participate in tuesday's old-boys draft, but still old enough to wish to avoid Johnny-First-Pick-Door-To-Nothingness
Whos in?
1. Kieran
2. Ross
3. Andy
4. Ben
5. Amar
6. Paul
7. Allan
8. Russ
Maybe it can become a regular thing?

Totally agree with Dan. I'm happy to occasionally draft with randoms, but in general relaxing with people I know - and being able to be rude/bitter loser (!) and not have my opponent take offence is awesome.

Tom - I struggle:
Sometimes I really want to be like that, the guy that rebuilds everyone's decks, very nicely points out their glaring errors after the match, has a look at whatever deck is in my opponent's bag with interest, etc...
But I do this kind of thing all day, sometimes I just want to talk shit with my friends, have a few beers, and play some challenging (though fun foremost) games of Magic, with people I already know, rather than random quiet visiting guy #453.
And this kind of event totally meets the latter desires.
Yeah - Tom of course what you suggest is very noble and community spirited but games are just more fun when you play them with people you know. It should totally be about Nathan tabling the foil cleric than PT silence!
Added Paul and Allan.
I'm up for this. Can't guarantee I won't first-pick DtN though...
Alright - all full up.
There will almost certainly be drop outs so having a few in reserve wouldn't be awful - and they can always draft in the normal pod...
I think the issue has always been people like to win, helping others improve is not to everyones gain (short sighted yes but people think this way), we had the same thing in Colchester where the same 2 people have won the wednesday draft for about 3 months, there is no attempt at people trying to help, but when these people play at a decent event they get destroyed.
The other issue is always how do you do constructive criticism, people get quite defensive about these things.
Geoff = Legend
Redraft rares is an even worse idea. Then when Kieran flashes his first pick bomb rare to his neighbor he's cheating me out of even more than usual!
Honestly I think this group has conflicting goals. I want a good competitive game and I want to mess around with my mates is two different things. And your pool of mates gets smaller if you don't let anyone new in ...
I think that the Tuesday lot are a bunch of tossers but really the only reason I think that is because they have their exclusive thing going on. Individually most of them are very nice, I'm sure. But if you want to be the next generation bunch of tossers then good luck to you :)
If wanting to draft with friends makes me a "next generation tosser" then so be it. I like a lot of the tuesday guys, and I think that organising things so that you can play with friends on your downtime once a week is completely the right idea.
I get it Ben, I really do. I'm just trying to point out that it isn't necessarily in the long term interests of the London Magic community to rock up at the Games Club and start saying who can and who can't draft with you. To me it's actually kind of mean. That you think the fun boost over playing in a random draft is worth it is a judgment you are entirely at liberty to make. But hopefully you can see my point too.
My next generation tosser description was meant to be playful rather than vindictive, sorry if I got the tone wrong. Internet forums suck.
Your leftist "the community is greater than the individual" attitude is admirable, but the fact is Jonny Random isn't having any less fun in a draft that doesn't include Me or Kieran.
Everyone spends time teaching new players, making new friends and building the community but like has been said by many people on this thread already, there comes a time when you just want to kick back and enjoy a draft with buddies. I just don't accept the point that the old boys draft has somehow been detrimental to the community and I don't believe this will be either.
Oh, so we do actually disagree about the effect rather than just whether the choice should be individual or community. I guess my thoughts are colored very strongly by the existing "Tuesday Night Lot" whom I always found standoffish and none of whom I ever befriended (except Simon, when he started doing things that weren't the Tuesday night draft). Perhaps that's peculiar to me or perhaps you guys will find a way to do it that doesn't make people feel like that. That would be cool.
So despite the objections this is still going ahead tomorrow, right? Everyone can still make it?
Might be there just after 7 but I'm def coming!
Are we gonna do it proper Old Man style (ie play everyone else best of 1) or normal 3 rounds swiss?
Redraft rares at the end?
