Magic: the Gathering in the UK
Tournament Report- Thursday night draft in New York, some thoughts and comparisons
I'm in New York at the moment, and have decided that I didn't fancy MODO'ing in my room on my own. Time to investigate the local experience. There's been a fair amount of talk recently about how the US market differs from the UK, this seemed worth posting to add to that.
Places to play: There's one shop in Manhattan that runs events. There are others in other parts of NY. It seemed as though no one was more than 30 mins or so from a place to play.
Location- The shop I went to was within walking distance of the centre of Manhattan. Just before I found it I looked up and suddenly realised that it is in fact right next to the Empire State Building. It's also with 100yds of some sex shops, it's not the nicest part of town, but still fine to get to.
They run magic on Thursdays, Fridays and at the weekend. So Jason beats them there. When I wanted to play Magic on a Monday/Tues/Wed in NY, I couldn't.
The play area is underneath a proper comic shop. They sell comics and a few magic related gaming supplies. I was surprised they didn't sell other games.
They had space for 66 players to play (just) in a basement. They ran standard, EDH and draft, with plenty of people playing each. Draft was $15, and packs in the shop were $4.
Not a lot else of interest to report.
Summary:
A shop near the centre of Manhattan is able to maintain playspace and run seemingly successfully. This is what we'd all expect, but it was nice to see it firsthand.

The skill level seemed quite low. But given how much I've been playing recently, I'm not sure I have the right to say that. I didn't beat the green player who passed 6th pick green mage :s
It did feel like more of a comic book crowd, and younger than the games club.
