Magic: the Gathering in the UK

Date: Saturday 3rd March - 12 noon

Where: Games Club - County Hotel

The idea:

* You design and submit 45 Magic cards in Magic Set Editor format

* Send finished cards to sim.okeeffe@gmail.com

* So do 7 other people

* We print them all out, shuffle into boosters

* draft and enjoy!

From comments in other threads it seems like there is definitely some desire to do this again. I personally had loads of fun, both designing and playing with the cards.

Threads from 1st time around:

You Make the Draft I - Initial thread

You Make the Draft I - Preliminaries

You Make the Draft I - Aftermath (includes link to visual spoiler of all created cards)

You Make the Draft II - Initial thread

You Make the Draft III - Aftermath

Things we learnt from the first time & suggestions:

  • Mixing "normal" and "funny" cards. Obviously we had the laughs but they tend not to be so funny the second time round
  • No planeswalkers. Having 8 untested planeswalkers in a draft can be pretty lopsided, especially as people tend not to design simple answer cards as they are dull
  • Similarly maybe we went too heavy on super power mythic bombs
  • Cards must have art (designer secret - finding lots of art first inspires lots of ideas for cards!)
  • Card designs should be scrutinised by somebody after submission to fix obvious rules/power issues
  • Having a theme or mechanic would really help tie the set together and help design cards
  • Someone has to design the sensible artifact/enchantment removal. I know they can be boring, but I'm sure there is interesting ways to do it

In the YMtD II there was some consensus that people wanted to design a big block of cards in a particular colour. We could certainly approach it this way.

Good point Tom. There was definitely a lot of people looking over shoulders during drafting and playing the set last time. I'm sure it would be easy to pickup extra players on the day, especially if we move it to the Saturday.

I guess some of you may be playing in the Manchester GPT, although I know Glenn and I won't.

You had a stab at a multiverse already:

http://magic.bluebones.net/multiverse.html

So if we can just export cards from MSE into it that might work?

I think if we do Sat Tim should be about as he mentioned shenanigans in London

So i had a change of tack about 5 this morning, now have 30 cards done for a set based on the show Supernatural (was really struggling for ideas before), my only issue will be printing them at work as the file type seems a bit strange.

So is the final plan Sat then

Sounds good Glenn, having a theme really helps with the ideas. I don't have one and so I'm just creating cards at random with whatever sparks in my head.

Unless Tom/Kieran say otherwise lets go ahead with Saturday.

I think Tom might be good enough to print out the set for us, he has done it before. That way he can bring all the cards on Saturday and we can cut them up and put it all together.

I would happily contribute to any printing/paper costs.

I would also like people to have a butchers at the cards and make any suggestions before we kick things off, I have done a lot of the main things from the show so now with the last 15 I am probably gonna just use some of the cool baddies, my sets are a little tilted towards white and black obv, so if someone else wouldn't mind evening things out a bit that would be grand

I looked at my colour distribution last night and I have mostly Green and Black cards so far, so I can just drop some black ones to make up for the extras you have.

If you want to send over the file to me when your done, I'll happily look it over. I haven't seen the show since the 1st season so I won't be able to judge how well you captured your theme :-)

cheers man should have it finished by tonight so should be able to send it late this eve, just need to finish finding some art for some of the cards.

Also sub theme Humans, Angels and Demons, plus new card subtype - Supernatural

Shocking behaviour Simon the show just gets better and more mental every season

I should be good for Saturday. While I didn't start with any real tribal themes, I've been making some blue and white creatures Human Wizards and my green creatures Frogs so that there's some cross-set synergy going on even if only a few of my guys actually have 'tribal' abilities. Story of my set so far seems to be "Frogs v Wizards". A classic Fantasy staple...

Alongside transvestite zombies and oodles of bears this is going to be a clash for the ages!

I have spoken to Tim and he is definately interested, he is trying to work out if he will get time to make the full 45 though, do we mind if it ends up being 5 instead of 4?

Not at all. As Tom said earlier, I doubt we will have trouble getting players on the day, so as long as we have enough cards designed to satisfy an 8 player draft I think we will be okay. So if Tim just gives us what he has then that is fine.

Once all the designs are in, lets say by Thursday night, then I can look them over, and can always pad out the set with cards from the previous You Make the Draft if we are short. This will also allow us to shore up the colour/spell type balance.

I should be able to make 45 cards by Thursday... it's Tuesday today, right? Will try to make sure my commons are all nice and simple to read so that the draft doesn't take forever.

Are we looking to prioritise any zones or anything in this set (e.g. hand size, graveyard) or card types? Is it particularly tribal?

Will try to make sure I have a good mix of colours, but if one colour is under-designed I can probably pick up some slack.
