Magic: the Gathering in the UK

Date: Saturday 3rd March - 12 noon

Where: Games Club - County Hotel

The idea:

* You design and submit 45 Magic cards in Magic Set Editor format

* Send finished cards to sim.okeeffe@gmail.com

* So do 7 other people

* We print them all out, shuffle into boosters

* draft and enjoy!

From comments in other threads it seems like there is definitely some desire to do this again. I personally had loads of fun, both designing and playing with the cards.

Threads from 1st time around:

You Make the Draft I - Initial thread

You Make the Draft I - Preliminaries

You Make the Draft I - Aftermath (includes link to visual spoiler of all created cards)

You Make the Draft II - Initial thread

You Make the Draft III - Aftermath

Things we learnt from the first time & suggestions:

  • Mixing "normal" and "funny" cards. Obviously we had the laughs but they tend not to be so funny the second time round
  • No planeswalkers. Having 8 untested planeswalkers in a draft can be pretty lopsided, especially as people tend not to design simple answer cards as they are dull
  • Similarly maybe we went too heavy on super power mythic bombs
  • Cards must have art (designer secret - finding lots of art first inspires lots of ideas for cards!)
  • Card designs should be scrutinised by somebody after submission to fix obvious rules/power issues
  • Having a theme or mechanic would really help tie the set together and help design cards
  • Someone has to design the sensible artifact/enchantment removal. I know they can be boring, but I'm sure there is interesting ways to do it

In the YMtD II there was some consensus that people wanted to design a big block of cards in a particular colour. We could certainly approach it this way.

I have sent the first draft to Simon today, if you can have a butchers at some stage so I cna make any changes.

Have we confirmed if Tom is able to print them out?

I should be able to send mine over for review tonight. Now we just need Tom to confirm if he can print them - not to mention whether he can actually make Saturday at all!

if not we definately have 4, we just need to bribe someone to print them off

Finishing mine up tonight, with pics. Have about 35 I'm really happy with, just polishing the last 10. Between my cards there is lots of incidental card drawing, so limited should be fun without too much mana screw.

Good stuff guys. I might be able to print them at work if I do it after everyone is gone on Friday, or I can go into the office on the way to the venue Saturday and do it then if it last resort. Just need to work out the printing format to ensure I get them the correct size.

I'll have enough bulk commons to use, does anyone happen to have a bulk lot of sleeves we could use. If not we can always buy a coupl eof packs of Mike on the day.

I also have plenty of cycling in my bunch of cards to help smooth out limited also.

Can probably print my set at work when nobody's paying attention. I don't have any regular cycling cards, but I do have a card with Frogcycling - which is clearly a better ability.

Hi guys.  For some reason I had no idea this thread was raging without me.  I'll "follow" it from now on.

Not sure about Saturday - somewhat in the balance.  I'm still in the Midlands at my mother-in-law's.  Don't you guys have printers?!

Of course not! The future is digital, who needs hardcopies anymore :-)

It looks like MSE arranges the cards in the correct size and format for you, so I should be able to print them at work.

Sorry my issue is not having a program at work that I use to print them, security on attachments and programs is quite high (strange as websites are fine)

I have now submitted mine to Simon, I have a load of sleeves but they are all different, I definately have about 40 of each type worst case I could bring them and we could re-distribute after the draft?

I don't mind buying a bunch of sleeves on the day, plus I have a bunch of sleeved basic lands (in black) from tom's cube that we can use - though we'll probably need more.

Ultra Pro Raven Black.  You know it makes sense.
