Rules

This competition is MTGO-based. You may play games with real/proxied decks in person but you must have your deck built on MTGO. The banned list is set in such a way to make the construction of MTGO decks very cheap (anything 1 tix or over is banned).  Anyone is welcome to enter.  If it's a success perhaps we will run others with a small entry free and (even) better prizes.

Entry
FREE

Prizes

This deckk was bad, how it did even vaguely well is a mystery

2 Conqueror's Pledge

4 Emeria Angel

4 Mirran Crusader

2 Kor Hookmaster

4 Kazandu Blademaster

4 Accorder Paladin

3 Kor Skyfisher

4 Steppe Lynx

4 Glorious Anthem

3 Journey to Nowhere

2 Brave the elements

24 Plains

Sideboard

3 Runed Halo

4 Luminarch Ascension

1 Brave the Elements

2 Day of Judgement

3 Devout Lightcaster

2 COP red

Congratulations are in order for Steppe Lynx for being just unbelievably bad, I mean I was never happy to see it turn 1, let alone turn 6 or 7. should have shifted to a more midrange build with 4 Pledge which was excellent, and 4 Brave the elements which never failed to be a blowout.  Day of Judgement was in theory good, with a lot of single card threats the deck doesn't struggle as much as you'd think against wrath, but unnecessary as it seemed every aggro deck I faced folded to mirran crusader. Devout lightcaster was in the board solely for nighthawk, which I never faced.

how did mono red not just win this tournament :P

No one played it!  Plus everyone had 4 CoP: Red in their sideboard!

Tried to make opposition work with green mana dorks and coiling oracle, but it didn't. So went with Phyrexian crusader & pants instead :

My list (iirc)

4 Phyrexian Crusader

4 Phyrexian Vatmother

4 Plague Myr

2 Flesh-Eater Imp

4 Vampire's Bite

2 Mortarpod

2 Trusty Machete

4 Duress

4 Virulent Wound

4 Go For The Throat

2 Mind Sludge

24 Swamp

Sideboard

1 Pit Trap (should have been trip noose)

4 Engineered Plague

3 Incremental Blight

2 Decimator Web (should have been trip noose)

2 Everlasting Torment (trumps COP :D)

3 Macabre Waltz (to get round DoJ)

Should have also had Ostracise in the sideboard to deal with Oversoul of Dusk, probably rather than the decimator webs. Crusader is a total boss, 2 turn clock with a machete and vamp bite and is often unblockable. Main problems were blastoderm, oversoul & trip noose. Wrath wasn't too bad, esp with the waltzes :D

Still have a couple of games to play, maybe tonight or tomorrow if anyone's around? Phil? Ben?

I had an Opposition deck too that was going to be my main deck for quite a while, before I switched to UW.

It had a problem with counterspells, but shoehorning some Spell Pierce in the main might fix that. The real key that I didn't hear anyone else mention is the inclusion of Static Orb. That turns the deck from a good disruption deck to a brutal lock. My rough list was:

4x Birds of Paradise

4x Llanowar Elf

4x Coiling Oracle

4x Court Hussar

4x Patagia Viper

4x Sleight of Hand

4x Impulse

4x Opposition

4x Static Orb

2x Supply//Demand (or Presence of Gond or White Sun's Zenith)

2x Simic Growth Chamber

2x Azorious Chancery

4x Adarkar Wastes

4x Yavimaya Coast (was this legal?)

9x Forest

1x Island

Well I paired Opposition with Silkbind Faerie which I thought was a pretty neat combo (incidentally this would've been insane with static orb!), but never really played an aggro/midrange matchup where it would have been at it's best.

Yeah, I had Puresight Merrow in the board, but his casting cost might actually have been prohibitive. I didn't like how Silkbind required a target, plus the Merrow would help you dig for action/counters/board cards, but I agree Silkbind would be nuts vs midrange/aggro decks.

In fact it might be that UW Opposition is actually just better than packing in the green 1 drops, it gives you better token producers and better mana, just slightly slower.

I tested Knacksaw Clique, didn't quite work - also, Opposition is terrible vs Blastoderm and Oversoul and not quick enough to lock them down

So glad nobody made the full prison deck. Being locked out by an Opposition + Static Orb deck would be even more soul crushing than being beaten to death for 1 a turn by Court Hussar.

Can we move on to the next one now? I guess not since a number of people could still come second if they win out - but it's been a while since we started and it would be good to get another done before I go away for Christmas.

Actually, I don't see any reason we can't just run another one concurrently - especially if the same people are going to play!

Yeah!

Baker - do you want to pull some sets out of the hat again?

i looked at some kind of Patagia Viper + Opposition + Static Orb deck as well but for some reason thought my Oversoul + Worship plan was going to be good (turns out its actually completely terrible when the most ubiquitous removal spell played is Journey to Nowhere)

OK I'm officially declaring this competition closed.

Simon wins, Josh is second.  Please meet up with me online to get your fabulous prizes.

I've added archetypes to the table and linked the decklists: http://magic.bluebones.net/byos/1/decklists.txt

Thanks for playing everyone!  I'll announce the next DTBYOS on Monday!
