Magic: the Gathering in the UK

I have heard of a tournament in the US where the prize is all of that year's unclaimed lost property and was thinking of doing the same thing at this year's Christmas event (between the Iron Man and Keith Loveys).

What do people think about making the format a Reject Rare Draft - each player would have to provide 45 rare / mythic rares as their entrance fee, these are then randomly made into 15 card all rare "repack" boosters, which are then distributed amongst the particpants and then everthing continues like a normal booster draft.

In this instance anyone that would receive a prize, gets to pick an item of lost property (they have to take the item away with them or dispose of prior to leaving (it can't be "re-lost" for next year.

Suggestion - each person may only include 1 copy of each card in their 45.

(this is a standard reject rare draft rule, i think)

i think i have about 14 cradle of vitality which might finally come in handy. Also Jason can we spread these 'fun' tournaments out a bit - it would be nice to have a casual event every 2/3 months instead all at once at keith loveys - at the minute all we do is standard, draft and sealed.

Unfortunately, like everyone else, I have bills to pay and food to purchase, whilst fun formats are... ...fun, they don't achieve covering either of the afforementioned costs of living.

If these type of events occured more regularly they would quite probably lose some of their funness, plus it would make it a lot harder to schedule other events like Pre-releases (4), Launch Parties (4), PTQs (3), GPTs (6-8), National Qulaifiers (1) and Release Events (1) without expecting everyone to commit all of their free time on Magic.

Look at it this way, whilst Christmas is great - all the food and the drinking and the shopping and the presents and the visiting friends and family - would get a bit too much for everyone if it happened every couple of months and it would certainly lose it's appeal.

Remember the saying that familiarity breeds contempt, this is true for tournaments too.
Is this why we all rinse on each other all the time then?

I thnk that a bunch of psychologists would have a field day working out why we all verbally beat up on each other, especially once you take out the factual stuff.

Certainly no more than a play set seems a reasonable maximum.
Really? 4 ofs?

Everyone will turn up with 4 mindlock orb, 4 cradle of vitality, and it'll totally suck as games will boil down to "who can draw one of their 2 creatures first"

I did a reject rare draft at Birmingham (M-Fest) and it was bad enough playing the games (as most of the reject rares are non-creatures), allowing 4 ofs would make it ZERO fun, trust me.

I could actually hear you saying this as I read it (not sure that a good voice to have in your head).

What if we impossed some additional requirements (for example and off the top of my head)
30-50% = creatures
0-20% = lands
10-30% = artifacts
20-40% = spells

These things work best if people select from as wide a pool of cards as possbile, it doesn't have to be just stuff that is Standard / Extended legal - put the rares from the Historical events at this years Nationals and the M-fests, ask people to throw in a shit rare of their choice whenever you do a trade.

By the way the Reject Rare Draft at M-fest was my idea and thanks go to Magic Madhouse for making up the "repacked" Boosters, shame neither of us realised that the event would have been so popular otherwise we would have tried to accommodate more players.

(Note for Steve - M-fest wasn't a European event, so you were allowed to have fun.)
If you can do a deal with "The Madhouse" and get a wide selection of his most pointless rares at some kind of bulk price I reckon that would be the way to do it. Small entry fee, hilarious draft, disastrous games where you dig to your single good creature with Ad Nauseam because Mindlock Orb has shutdown your Telemin Performance. I'd be willing to stump up in advance if it helps.
I would certainly back up Dan's recommendation of 1 copy of a single card per players submission. You might also want to impose some colour balance too:

Potentially 7 of each colour, and then 10 for artifacts, lands, golds, and hybrids.
Reject rare draft sounds like fun.
The thing I do at the end of each term is a sort of keith lovey rip off: 2HG drinking draft with 6 different boosters, and the 6th always being unhinged. I think that's quite fun too.
Cheers for all the invites, DAN.

"term" .... university term, means university society, so I can't really have people who aren't part of UL :(
