Reid Duke got a last pick Burning Vengeance at the PT in Pod 1.

Because you can't go Burning Vengeance in pack 1 because there aren't any and two packs of an Uncommon is not enough.

Without the possibility of multiples and a certain level of predictability lots of decks cease to be possible (Spider Spawning, Burning Vengeance).

So, can cubes compensate for this with redundancy - cards that do pretty much the same thing as other cards?  Or could there be such a thing as a cube with multiples that might be better than a cube without multiples?  Would you truly want a 10,000 card cube so that you can have multiples at times but not at others?  Could such a thing be managed online if not in paper?

(Aside: are we going to build our own cube/draft set from cards we have invented and judicious reprints?  One night a week at TGC?)

Here's one for you:

Squadron hawk - how many should you get if you draft it?

It's against the rules in commander, but would you refuse to play with me if I had a set in my deck?

i'm just putting one in my bird commander deck - along with a talon trooper of course!

the difference between spider spawning and burning vengeance is quite interesting -

the spider spawning deck worked with a variation of cards and you only needed one of a each - the decks would come out slightly different each time - some with spawning as the win - some aiming for the combo - some winning with maniac.  you also didnt need all the pieces to make the deck - you could even not have spider spawning if you had enough other stuff and one of the other win conditions.

Burning vengeance needed vengeance in multiples to be good.  so was more dependant on one card.

It is very possible to design a draft set that allows for spider spawning type decks - you just make cards that care about the same things - like your graveyard cube.  it seems likely, with good design that a set like this would develop over time as new interactions were spotted.  designing a set that allows for decks like vengeance seems harder (if there are not multiples) unless you have tutoring effects.

even then i dont think vengeance style strategies are as good as spawning ones as they rely on one card, and a good vengeance deck looked the same at the start of innistrad as it did at the end.  this is not true of the various mill strategies.

I am actually thinking of putting 4 squadron hawk and gifts ungiven in a U/W Sygg commander deck, because even though banned they would be completely fair, and screw you you can't tell me what to do.

Unfortunately Dan although it is a lovely friendly casual format you'll probably have the same problem I had with my Enchantress EDH with Genju of the Fields as general. Even though I didn't even particularly want to cast the guy the fact that he was a Legendary Enchantment not a Legendary Creature meant as often as not people made me switch to Progenitus with great indignation.

I wouldn't mind, though.

Ross I think you are right. Better to have broad areas of synergy than a particular card or cards that you have to have for an archetype to work. I'm in love with cards that look shit until you break them at the moment. Gnaw to the Bone being the main one but I find everything from Mulch to Demonmail Hauberk inspiring.

have you considered talon trooper?

Don't be silly, it's obviously bonkers.
