Magic: the Gathering in the UK

Date: Saturday 31st March - 12 noon

Where: Penderel's Oak - High Holborn

Concept:

* Each participator designs 45 Magic cards in Magic Set Editor format

* Send finished cards to sim.okeeffe@gmail.com

* We print them all out, sleeve them up, and shuffle into boosters

* Draft and enjoy!

Although there was only four of us who did this last time, many onlookers expressed their interest in being part of the next one.

Threads from previous instances:

You Make the Draft I - Initial thread

You Make the Draft I - Preliminaries

You Make the Draft I - Aftermath (includes link to visual spoiler of all created cards)

You Make the Draft II - Initial thread

You Make the Draft III - Initial thread

You Make the Draft III - Aftermath (includes link to MSE file)

Things we learnt from the previous attempts and loose rules:

  • No planeswalkers. Having 8 untested planeswalkers in a draft can be pretty lopsided, especially as people tend not to design simple answer cards as they are dull
  • Super power mythic bombs - try and limit yourself to 1, if you desperately need more, let us know and we can try and accommodate them
  • Cards must have art (designer secret - finding lots of art first inspires lots of ideas for cards!) (DeviantArt is a pretty good resource)
  • Designing heavily linear/parasitic cards, as your 45, that all interact with each other is not really going to work if we get 360 cards total. If you want to do something like this then let everyone know so they can either support your theme or veto it mercilessly
  • Having a theme or design goal would be a great way to help tie different peoples 45 cards together. If you have any suggestions please post them

EDIT: We have chosen "land matters" as a theme, so try and include a smattering of cards that interact with lands in some way.

People who have expressed interest so far:

  1. Simon
  2. Tom Baker
  3. Kieran
  4. Glenn
  5. Andy
  6. Dan
  7. Charlie
  8. Phil
  9. Rebecca

Definite praise for everyone contributing to this (either by making cards or just by turning up!). Though some of the rares were ultra-powerful, really they were no more broken than the stuff you'd find in a regular set - there were just so many of them in the original draft that if you killed one your opponent would likely make another!
I guess it doesn't really matter if things are powerful as long as they're fun to play with. The things that turned out to be the most objectionable were those that stopped you being able to play the game - the dredge reomoval spell, the sword that skipped your attack step and the guy who could flicker lands were just so frustrating to play against!
Also got to say that my cards just didn't really work. The choice between paying and sacrificing lands wasn't really a choice at all since you'd never want to sacrifice the lands to play the spells early and late on you would usually have the mana to just cast them. Practically the only times I ever used the sacrifice part were when I was mana screwed and about to lose anyway or when the card replaced the land you sacrificed!

What I'm now thinking I should have done was make the alternate cost "discard a land card". That way I could have kept the focus of the idea (get things early and/or off colour but it costs you land) without having to keep the bad part (you totally ruin yourself by paying the alternate cost). It would also make for some pretty interesting opening hand decisions as land-heavy hands might actually be playable if you had some good stuff to cast with the alternate cost. Some cards would probably need redesigning, though!

Kieran I must say on a number of occassions I used the ability, mostly on about turns 4 to power some fatty

Was a really good day, though I did realise most of my cards would be cut ! Gauging the power level was actually quite hard in the end as you dont want to make the vanilla stuff, but thats what often wins games ! (AND BOMBS)

Aslo because not eveyone made cards, all my titans and man lands ended up on the first draft and having both a man land and Titan was pretty broken ! Also thought people would make more LD stuff but realised there really wasnt much, the man lands where broken. I did really like them though so will go through them and make them fairer for next time !

Defintiely have a better idea of what to make next time ! also can i say the spell melange was broken too ! BAKER !

Def up for testing again and bringing more commons/ uncommons this time !

Uhh Melange was actually one of my cards so I'll take the blame for that.

I knew that the green kicker was too good, but as I hadn't planned on it being in the drafts we did on Saturday so never bothered to change it, but otherwise I don't think it is too broken. Certainly does need some balancing though.

I don't think all your man lands were broken, certainly very, very, strong though. The ability to errata them mid-combat step is also too good :-)

As the designer of the cards and being a bit dyslexic I thought that was fine ! As telling everyone it had flying and not errating mid combat step seemed unfair haha ! as I think I definitely won games against dan and kieran saying it had had flying which in my mind it did, untill i read my own card again...

will send you the errated stuff for the whole spoiler list

thank god you proof read my other cards... !!!

For anyone who is at the club tonight, I brought the cube with me today in case anyone is interested in some Winston or topdeck prior to the draft.

I'm planning on coming down, but need to get some games in with my Modern Rotisserie pile if anyone else will have theirs with them?

Was going to come for Modern Rotisserie plus EDH but I left my rotisserie at home and this is clearly a better plan anyway. As long as I get all the Titans...
What's the status on the spoiler Baker? Would be good to see all the awesome stuff I never got to play against...

Awesome, thanks Tom.

Looks like Charlie's and Andy's cards are missing still, hopefully they will pass them on at some point. Looking across all the cards again already makes me want to play with them again as I can see some of the overarching designs people tried to get in there.

Tom's cyclying, dredge, delve zombies looks like a deck, and I'm sure there is a good deck there in Kieran's cards too. I think it would be worth playing again with all the cards from the first set taken out so we can see if the "lands matter" theme actually comes across.

Looking back across my titan's they don't look too oppressive. The green and red ones might be too good. I've already corrected a few templating issues I found in my cards in my own cardfile, so I might resend it in case you are going to update the visual spoiler once you have all the cards.
