Magic: the Gathering in the UK

After a little informal discussion I think it's time for You Make the Set 7.

We've done this a few times before. As always anyone is welcome to contribute as much or as little as they'd like.

Saturday October 12th looks like the date for the official draft to me as there is no TGC event and it's before I am off to the US.

I'm a little vague on exactly what You Make the Set means this time around. Here are some options.

  1. Invent some cards, send them to me, I'll print the lot, we show up on October 12th having not really seen each others designs and having not tested and we draft them.
  2. Design a set on Multiverse with a little editing and feedback and tweaking and set mechanics. With a deadline of three weeks it will necessarily be a little rough but something less free-for-all than (1).
  3. Bring together classic Magic cards with some (how many?) new designs of our own to make a sweet set to draft. Evoke meets Landfall meets Blind Seer.

Additionally, if we are having a theme, I'm not sure which theme we like out of:

    1. Whatever you like/no theme.
    2. Wedges.
    3. Lands.
    4. Top-down Egyptian theme with Sphinxes, Pyramids, Mummies, Jackal-headed creatures, etc.
    5. Some other theme I haven't thought of

I'm inclined to go with 2 (multiverse) and D (Egyptian) or maybe 3 (classic cards) and C (lands) but what do you think?

I feel Facebook is probably your best bet for getting players. Don't tell anyone they have to put in any effort and we'll be golden.
Also, if it's only going to be us three doing things then abandoning the secrecy and doing it on Multiverse might be the best bet in the end. Plus it means people can contribute without actually having to design anything or play on the day.

That is a fair point Kieran, so instead of Egypt/Britain/Space Cucumbers, we just need to decide on a mechanical theme. Some options are:

1) Lands
2) Tribal
3) Colour matters
4) Exiled matters
5) Hand matters

These are things I think haven't been covered in too much depth by wizards or done recently. Hand and Exile may be too sparse and could be combined.

you had better put in a card for space cucumbers now

Exile as a theme would work wonderfully with an Egyptian theme. The cycle from play to graveyard to exile and back to play representing a journey from life through death into the underworld and then being reborn. A combination of graveyard-fillers, graveyard exilers (like Delve spells) and abilities that work from Exile would make a pretty cohesive set.

Nice, I can see that working. You did have a mechanic from the aborted Wedges that might fit:

Gather the Lost - 5W
Sorcery
Put a 1/1 white spirit creature token with flying onto the battlefield for each exiled creature card you own.
Recall - 5B (You may cast this card from exile for its Recall cost. Then put it on the bottom of your library.)

Might need to work on the mechanic name a little if we want to continue with Egyptian theme.

I don't know if we want to expand the cycle to:

Library -> Play -> Graveyard -> Exile -> Library

or just have:

Play -> Graveyard -> Exile -> Play

Might also want to restrict it to just creatures, if we are representing the afterlife journey.

Hmm some brief research shows that the afterlife in Egypt was a final destination, there was no return to the land of the living. We can just convienently ignore that or have things just triggering on exile from graveyard (reaching the heavenly afterlife).

In! Got some ideas already :)

also, are any "un-" themed cards allowed?

e.g.

"That's what she said..." 2BUU

Instant

You may say that's what she said, and exile a blue or black card from your hand rather than pay the casting cost for ~this.

Counter target spell, it's controller loses 2 life.

45 cards each right? any split along colour lines?

Right now there is 4 of us so we need to recruit some number of other card creators or players that are not going to make any cards.

I'd like in. With regards to exiled I like the idea of some colours trying to pull things back and some trying to keep them there, though maybe that ends up being too similar to graveyard matters.

I think the easiest way to get things of your own into exile is to have it as an alt or extra cost for spells and abilities

It may not matter to us but Maro hates using Exile as a second graveyard and even hated Runic Repetition (which development added).
