Magic: the Gathering in the UK

I loved Innistrad.  I believed Maro when he said New World Order made things better for experienced players too and used Innistrad as an example.

Then Modern Masters came out and despite having to include a bunch of rares and only being allowed cards from Mirrodin to Shards it was way better than anything we've seen since Innistrad, and most of what came before, too.

It will be minimum one year until the next Modern Masters.

So, my idea is, let's make our own Modern Masters.

Random ideas that are very much half formed:

* 6 of each of 60 commons, 3 of each of 60 uncommons, 2 of each of 50 rares, 1 of each of 10 mythics is 650 cards.

* Use old cards, pre-Mirrodin, for spell-based funtimes and novelty even for players that have been playing for a while.

* Invent cards where necessary to fill holes.

* Some possible seeded archetypes: free spell necro, ug madness, gro, draw-go, astral slide, reanimator, artifact control, mill, auras, tokens, birthing pod, pox, sacrifice, prison, wizard tribal.

* Possibly include a lot of Legacy playables and call it "Legacy Masters".  What wizards would print if they said fuck it to the secondary market and the reserve list and tried to support legacy via a "Masters" release.

What do you think?  Interested in being on the development team?  Could make for some cheap Tuesday nights during the long reign of M14* ...

* = Bit of a cheap shot.  I've actually really enjoyed 3 of the last 4 core set drafts.

That's better.   4442 cards.  Just 4214 to eliminate :)

One big question for the set is "morphs or not?"  The only number of morphs that's definitely wrong is 1 but we should probably either have it as a sub-theme or not.

I have no strong opinion either way although Whipcorder is a cool Rebel and Voidmage Prodigy is a cool Wizard.

The Mistform creatures might help us support some tribal stuff if we want to (not Rebels, though).  Or we might decide that is copying Modern Masters too much.

Whittled down to 3668 by removing Unglued and some other odd sets released in our timeframe but not actually in scope ...

Tom I'm getting an "Unable to select database: mv" error. This is using Google Chrome

The error text is just on a blank page and occurred after I tried logging in via Google

Has anyone mentioned cycling and astral slide yet? it's tl;dr for me to go through the whole thread. This would be fun

Yes, we mentioned it briefly right at the start. I think it would be a good include as cycling is a nice limited smoother, easy to passively support with viable limited cards, and Astral Slide is fun, and fairer with no stacked damage!

Simon - try visiting a page that isn't quite so intense.  mv isn't happy with 3000+ cards.

then do some searches to see what you want to see rather than visiting the homepage.  And retire things - that will speed it up! :)

Cycling lands + Astral Slide + other cyclers sounds good.

Yeah I think cycling should in, and supported reasonably heavily if possible.

Not too sure on morphs, although they do make limited more interesting I guess.

Cycling Clerics!  Supporting Clerics, Astral Slide and Living Death all at the same time, maybe!

Cycling lands for Terravore and Astral Slide.  Synergy!

We also need to decide how we feel about land destruction.  Wasteland, Stone Rain and a zillion other LD cards are in this pool.

Wasteland is unlikely to impact limited, no? Shift it up to rare/mythic (as it surely would be if WotC did such a set), if it is even needed?

Yes following our imaginary management idea Wasteland probably does go to Rare and we don't reprint and LD.  That might be the best plan.

Getting excited about UG Madness, cycling, Enchantress, Clerics, Wizards, Goblins, sacrifice and various other things currently.

Worth noting that it doesn't take very many cards to make a theme.

At Common in MMA:

3 Shapeshifters
8 Faeries
8 Giants (including Crush Underfoot and Stinkdrinker Daredevil)
8 Goblins (including Warren Weirding)
11 Arcane spells (including Hana Kami)

18 commons in each color.
