Magic: the Gathering in the UK

So I spent a fair amount of time over the weekend trying to work out if I do want to give up playing magic completely and haven't really come up with an idea (winning the colchester game day while actually enjoying playing standard), I thought I would have a butchers at how I actually did this year while playing, I am not bragging (obv) just trying to work out if I just not up to scratch, so here we go:

Magic events played this calender year, relevant finishes only, played total in brackets:

Prereleases - 4 1st (6)

Draft - won 3 (8)

Release - 2nd and a 3rd (4)

GBP - 2nd (1)

Nats Q - 3rd (2)

Nats and GP - (2)

Gameday (draft + standard) - 1st (1)

for comparison here is WOW, am thinking of playing only 1 in tournys next year is why:

Random - 3 1st (3)

Release - 1st (1)

Nats q - 2nd (1)

Draft - 2 1st (2)

nats - 16th (1)

just not sure it's worth all the money and time any more

Do you enjoy WOW as much as magic? If you do and its supported enough where you are then I would say focus on that. It seems you have beeter results there although to be fair you havent played a lot of either.

I actually enjoy playing WOW a lot more but the people aren't even close to being as good times

We could try and get WoW going in London, if enough of us were interested I'm sure Jason (if not then Dark Sphere) would at least consider running a trial event for it. Then in time if some Magic players migrate across or take it up as well, you'll have some more fun opposition to play with?

I know Thom and myself would attend, we played a bit on Sunday afternoon with the class starters I bought and enjoyed it a lot.

josh has been telling me about the wow game and it sounds fairly sweet in that standard decks are like a hundred quid to build

i'd definitely go and play a tournament of it as long as someone teaches me how to play the night before lol

Well, there should be a pre-release in Jan/Feb, so perhaps we can have a London one then?

If not, I wouldn't be averse to going to Xtreme to try it out.

it's in Feb, there will be realm qualifiers defo in Ipswich and nats qualifiers as well.

It is pretty sweet, there are some obvious issues at the mo:

15 out of the top 16 at worlds were all based on Grand Crusader (3 drop that gives all 2 or less cost guys +2/+2) yes it's crazy.

The company that run it are a shambles, they let people at nats run proxies, they told people at worlds they could play with a set that isn't released yet (some people got hold of some promo's, but not many people), they will quite often phone Nick (xtremetrades) on a Thursday and say you have tourney to run on Saturday and we can't get you prizes by then either.

But the game itself is very good, also very quick best of 1 means tournys are done in about 2/3 hours as opposed to all day long

best of 1?

Our assessment on sunday was that going first is a pretty big advantage. were we just wrong?

same as magic it can be but the extra card is also quite big, also means that deck building is a bit harder as you can't just say my deck beats x but loses to Y you have to have a chance against the field.  This means that a lot of decks don't play a streight 4 of most things and generally play a few 1 of win cons.

I might well bring some decks down at the weekend

I won't be there this weekend, but let's play some soon, yea?
