Anyone here good at building mana bases for 4 colour decks?

I want a mana base that is able to cast 1WWU and also 2BR on turn 4.

I dont know if I should be running Evolving Wilds or the land that makes any colour but costs 1 when you play it. Perhaps both but that could make the deck too slow.

My initial uneducated and untested stab is:

4 Hallowed Fountain
4 Blood Crypt
4 Steam Vents
4 Evolving Wilds
1 Mountain
2 Plains
1 Island
1 Swamp
4 Isolated Chapel

which gives you 12+ theoretical sources of each of your colors in 25 lands.  It's pretty bloody awful, though.  Maybe Transguild Promenade is necessary.  With 8+ t1 red sources maybe you play Pillar of Flame and hope a t1 Pillar is enough to get you through skipping t2?

You need lands that tap for w/r and w/b, then less lands that tap for u/r and u/b.

black red (blood crypt) and blue white (hallowed fountains) lands are not what you are looking for as they can provide you with one or other, but not both.

Try:

4 evolving wilds

4 plains

1 Island

1 Swamp

1 mountain

4 clifftop retreats

4 isolated chapel

4 steam vents

4 drowned catacombs

this gives you approx 95% chance of hitting your rb and u, and about 86% of having access to your 2 white sources from 11 cards on turn 4. (drops to about 93% and 80% on the play

Of course, whether you can use them or not - they may be tapped is another matter!!

The basic land types that I have listed should give you a fair shot at making them untapped though as the plains will put the retreats and chapels in untapped and the steam vents will help the retreats and the catacombs.

You really need Pete or Stanj for this!

I would suggest Tom's initial suggestion has too many rav duals and not enough M10-type lands. You're a control deck, you don't really want to be losing life too often if you can avoid it.

I am assuming you don't need R+W, B+W, R+U or U+B together, so those combos would be the ones i'd want to play.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Dan!

Side note, I am so out of touch that I actually had to go look up what lands were in standard :P

Hey, I wrote that before I saw your reply, and you said the same thing as me but with more detail, so...

Good points chaps.  WWU seems much more likely this way :)

just to say that I hate mana bases and never ever ever advise on them...

Sorry Pete!

If you can be arsed, you can use the hyper geometric function to work out your percentage success of drawing the combination of cards you want based on the number that are in the deck.

I know that the maths in this article is correct, but I don't have MS Office to check if the spreadsheets actually work (but i presume they do)
