Magic: the Gathering in the UK

We can now confirm the first - of what we hope to be many - large Modern tournament of the new Season.

DATE: Saturday 12/11/10

TIME: 13:00 to 19:00

VENUE: Dark Sphere Gaming Venue (45 York Road)

Cost: £8

Decklists are required, as are appropriate tokens, dice etc.

PRIZES!

1st place: 4 x Sacred Foundry

2nd + 3rd to be confirmed, based on numbers. Likely to be equivalent of 2 x Shock Land for 2nd place and 1 x Shock land for 3rd place.

If demand is there we will begin awarding Power for Legacy tournaments and Legacy Duals for Modern tournaments. We'll continue to support Eternal Magic in London for as long as there are players.

We hope you can attend - if I have missed anything out or would like any extra info then drop a reply below or add us as a friend on facebook at 'DarkSphere London'.

Thanks all,

Mark Gunther

yo phil rogers you seem to be rinsing the darksphere dudes for no real reason, in other threads beyond this one too. are you even going to play in this tournament? even if you are, do you really care about the distribution of product in the prize structure?

i don't really understand why you're giving them a hard time over such minutiae when it would surely be better for the london magic community if you would instead give them support

Yea, taking pot shots from afar is not the way to compete with them, running bigger and better events is.

We appreciate your words Dan and Philip D.

Over the past few months we've realised a huge demand in London for large scale events across a variety of formats. It seems to be that either no other store is running them, or they aren't being run in a way that the community is screaming for. We've listened to the community and we will continue to do so. I for one [this is Mark Gunther here..) have a real desire to help promote Magic in London. All of Dark Sphere share this concern, so when a player approaches us requesting new formats, large tournaments, more drafts.. We're here to provide.

We're trying to be a benevolent force here in London, and we've no ill thoughts for any player or TO anywhere in London or England.

A number of players - regulars from other clubs - are able to come and enjoy our events and we sincerely hope that you can also, Phil.

Still, aside from that.. To answer your concern head on as for Booster prizes in the Modern event:

As with any large scale event there is an inherent risk in guaranteeing X prizes for ranks Y and Z. We're more aware of the Legacy community and have stuck our neck out to say 'turn up for your chance to win cards from a ~£400 prize pool!'

The Modern community is less established. Much less. It's a new format that many players are fearful of buying into due to the bannings.. But we're actively trying to change that. We are [and will continue] offering rare Dual lands as prizes for playing. So far there is no evident play group for Modern in London, and we again are sticking our neck out to try to change this. We're already putting ~7 RAV block duals on the line. If you'd like more detail on the '~' I'll say this. We're looking at a prize split ration of 4:2:1 for 1st 2nd and 3rd place. We've guaranteed 4 Duals for 1st place, so the rest follows.

We appreciate that you may desire more details on the 2nd and 3rd place prizes, but we felt that the community would prefer at least knowing of the existence of the event even if some details are yet to be confirmed.

All feedback is appreciated, though. Thanks for your concerns, we'll take it all onboard.

How are you going to distribute the 3rd place prize? Just from a tournament logistics POV, it feels like you shouldnt be giving it out based on who came 3rd on breakers, but if you were planning on doing a 3rd place play off fair dos. Wish I could come back for this, modern looks like fun and I actually own cards for it..
I'd assume a third place playoff in Top 8 like at Nats.

For a defined 3rd place there will be a play off.

We can now announce a side event of ZEN ZEN WWK draft, with ZEN pack prize pool. Entry for the event is £16 (incll prize pack, obviously).

Likewise we can announce a Mercadian Masques block draft for our Legacy event, at a price of £15, including prize pack.

Drafts will commence at the start of Round 3 for both events.
