I wasn't arguing about cost, things may have gotten more expensive over time, but that's just something that happens. 

 

Can't find the link right now, but someone did an analysis of Ravnica standard vs now, and competitive deck costs are pretty much the same, just the value is contained in a smaller percentage of the cards.

I wonder what it would look like if it took inflation into account, I don't think the article does (I have only skimmed it so far). There was also a recession between now and Ravanica which could affect things either way (value of money changed, more people are unemployed etc.).

One of the things I like about Magic is that there are always answer cards (and answer cards for the answer cards).

The last point about about not really being able to trade up to tournament mythics is the key one. 

If the only option is to crack them or buy them then it does cost more hard cash to buy decks.

i've read that article before, and its largely bollocks. his whole premise presupposes the "fact" that the cost of magic has actually decreased, something i refute. price aside, i challenge anyone to name a less fun standard season than this one. if you can come up with one then i'll concede the point to you, but i honestly can't think of one.

For me, Jund domination AND Faeries domination were both less fun than this.  But then I have a playset of Jaces both online and offline.

I do hate Mythics, but I hate planeswalkers more.  If I could only get rid of one it would be Planeswalkers.  (To Simon's point - there aren't many answers to them.)

Here here. Mythics are annoying, but so is the process of getting hold of any cards for a deck. Planeswalkers have changed the way the game works as a game.
