Magic: the Gathering in the UK

Date: Saturday 3rd March - 12 noon

Where: Games Club - County Hotel

The idea:

* You design and submit 45 Magic cards in Magic Set Editor format

* Send finished cards to sim.okeeffe@gmail.com

* So do 7 other people

* We print them all out, shuffle into boosters

* draft and enjoy!

From comments in other threads it seems like there is definitely some desire to do this again. I personally had loads of fun, both designing and playing with the cards.

Threads from 1st time around:

You Make the Draft I - Initial thread

You Make the Draft I - Preliminaries

You Make the Draft I - Aftermath (includes link to visual spoiler of all created cards)

You Make the Draft II - Initial thread

You Make the Draft III - Aftermath

Things we learnt from the first time & suggestions:

  • Mixing "normal" and "funny" cards. Obviously we had the laughs but they tend not to be so funny the second time round
  • No planeswalkers. Having 8 untested planeswalkers in a draft can be pretty lopsided, especially as people tend not to design simple answer cards as they are dull
  • Similarly maybe we went too heavy on super power mythic bombs
  • Cards must have art (designer secret - finding lots of art first inspires lots of ideas for cards!)
  • Card designs should be scrutinised by somebody after submission to fix obvious rules/power issues
  • Having a theme or mechanic would really help tie the set together and help design cards
  • Someone has to design the sensible artifact/enchantment removal. I know they can be boring, but I'm sure there is interesting ways to do it

In the YMtD II there was some consensus that people wanted to design a big block of cards in a particular colour. We could certainly approach it this way.

What date and time  (6.30pm, TGC, Wed Feb 29 gets my vote, but that may be too soon?) - we should add that to the top post.

As for themes/mechanics I think all we had so far was "Zombies and Wizards".  Perhaps we want another mostly-free-for-all draft before we start solidifying there?

Yes that could work. I remember someone mentioning that in the aftermath of this one we could pick the best 50-100 or so cards that offered a kernel of a set and build around those for the next one.

Since I was going to go to the Standard that day anyway I'd definately be up for doing this instead. Hopefully 4 days is enough time to make 45 cards from scratch....

I should be able to make this and 45 cards for this set, time for some random critter type me thinks argghhhhh yes frogs is the obv winner

Im up for this but only after the 29th / lille

So how is this going for everybody?

I have almost a 100 cards total designed now (includes my 45 from the last set).

If creature types are important to anyone, my populous races are Frogs, Wizards, Horrors, and Bears.

If it is going to be a real struggle to be done for Wednesday, then I imagine we could do this on Saturday 3rd?

To be honest I was out all weekend but should be able to get something done for Wednesday if required, Saturday would work better for me.

I will get back tomorrow with some more details of the set I have designed, should I split the colours evenly or is that not an issue?

I don't think it is too big an issue if your colours are lopsided. Do let us know if you are going to submit 45 green cards or something though :-)

I haven't a scooby doo to be honest I will try and make it at least somewhat even

I've made zero so far. Sure I'll be okay though. The biggest problem I see right now is having enough people since I only count 4 signed up so far! I think I can do Saturday, and we might get more people involved by putting it on a weekend.

True. Looking through the interested people from the aborted second attempt many of them are no longer regulars at the club, so perhaps I misjudged the level of interest.

I have no problem doing this with just 4, but I agree that 8 is a better number.

We might be able to get players even if we can't get designers.  Also Rob Stanjer has shown vague interest but we all know not to rely on that :)

I probably won't be able to make Wednesday - my Mother-in-Law is not well and I'm going up there tonight.

Good article on the mothership today for would-be designers: http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/mm/1...

Interesting.  We can always share designs on here without playing - build up the set in theory to some degree. We need our own Multiverse really, don't we?  Should be not too hard to put together ...
