I know that Pete and Charlie both made top 8 in this, and that Aron Biddle won it.
More info/exciting stories?

Not much to say, I played a mono red deck I designed on the train on the way to the venue. Thankfully, charlie and some people I met from croydon on the train helped me out with the cards (I bought some too).

Due to jetlag and a rough night on Friday I played pretty badly in the t8 in a very good matchup. G1 I kept a very poor hand for the matchup, G2, I sideboarded incorrectly, taking out too many threats and eventually just dying to midrange gw creatures. I will 100% play something similar next week in Milton Keynes.

List:

4 Stromskirk Noble

2 Chronomaton

1 Spikeshot Elder

2 Grim Lavamancer

4 Stromgold Beserker

4 Chandra's Pheonix (not convinced with this)

2 5/5 Haste Dragon (didn't draw any all day, I think they would have been better than hellriders, which would have died to restoration angel)

4 Gut Shot (These were awesome all day)

2 Dismember

3 Arc Trail

4 Volt Charge (synegises directly with 18 cards in the deck!)

4 Shrine of Burning Rage

2 Koth

21 Mountain (possibly 1 too many)

2 Hellion Crucible

SB:

2 Batterskull (these were VERY good)

3 Torpor Orb

2 Slagstorm (poor, even vs elves, will change for whipflare)

1 Dismember

1 Arc Trail

2 Pillar of Flame

1 Koth

1 3/3 Haste Threaten

2 Torch Fiend

R1:

Vs. Delver

G1 I played turn 2 shrine and he just died

G2, he had to use a vapor snag on my 4/4 chronomaton, so wasn't able to save his restoration angel from a dismember.

R2

Vs. BR Vampire

A long grinding game which came down to a mid-game shrine for 14 g1, and batterskull in g2.

R3

Vs. BW Control

Marco insists mono red is awful and this matchup is unwinnable, but I'm not sure. If they stumble, they lose, and especially g2 its possble to grind them out with batterskulls. G1 I beat him with shrine + koth, G2 I make a critical error. I am on 35 life, he is on 28 due to turn 3 + 4 pristine talisman (without being able to draw torch fiend about 20 turns in). I have done maybe 60-70 damage in this game already. He plays gristlebrand, I have a shrine on 7, and a batterskull on the table, with 9 mana available, so I just shrine it eot, he draws 7 and is able to get back into the game, able to draw his sorin (to get me down from 40 life) whilst on 8. The mistake? My topdeck was Zealous Conscipts.... (think about it :P). G3 he mulls to 5 and I kill him on turn 5 through a wrath.

R4

Vs. Mono black control (your  t8 opponent at nats last year).

We reminisce about past glories. Unfortunately he is playing mono black, so his only answer to shrine/koth is karn. He actually manages to win 1 game, by turn 5/6 karn. But the other 2 are not close

R5

Vs. Elves

I crush him G1, but flood/screw.

R6

Vs. UG Stalker/Blade

At this point it is about 2am Chinese time. This game is incredibly nerve wracking and afterwards I am physically exhausted. G1 I manage to tempo him out, but in g2 and g3 (after I mull to 5 in g3) he makes turn 2 stalker. Every turn he stops in draw step, looks at his top card and plays it after thought. We both know Sword of War and Peace on a Stalker kills me (I only have 2 Torch Fiends, relying on shrine/dismember/batterskull to beat Sword in other matchups). G2 I find out he kept 5 island, stalker, sword but he kills me anyway. G3 goes for about 20 turns as my shrine ticks up racing his stalker whilst we both play irrelevant spells and lands. Luckily he doesn't draw it, so I kill him.

R7

Vs. RUG Talrand (lots of Free spells + Quirion Dryad/Delver)

This matchup felt pretty bad, especially in g1 where he gets a huge dryad quickly and protects his talrand from volt charge and arc trail with mutagenic growths whilst tappped out. G2 he has me, but becomes overconfident when he thinks I have no out to his 8/8 dryad and snapcaster when on 4 life, with 1 card in hand, a torch fiend to chump block and a shrine on 6 counters. To play around tricks, he ponders trying to find an island for the vapor snag he has targetted with snapcaster. He doesn't get it, I chump block, volt charge snapcaster and charge shrine, kill his dryad on my turn, and am able to drag myself back into the game with some very tight play. G3 he is mentally crushed and I beat him quite quickly.

R8

ID Vs. Charlie

R9 (Quarter finals)

Vs. My r5 opponent.

This is supposed to be a good matchup, but I mess up basically, with Charlie also playing elves in semis... Felt pretty bad about it today, but was honestly playing the match as a zombie, from r6 onwards.

This deck was a great choice for the tournament and for t2 in general. So many decks are clunky and rely on turn elves to get going, and thragtusk to stabilise. Mono red is a great way to punish this, as thragtusk costs FIVE mana. Timely reinforcements is now often a 2 of in sbs at most in delver decks. The important card to handly is restoration angel, and maybe a 4th dismember should be in the sb. Chronomaton is nowhere near as  bad as it looks too :P

I just lost an elf mirror which is a bit of a crapshoot. I messed up g2 a little but I don't think it would have made any difference.

Well Done Peter, your deck looked fun and some much like my red decks from last year. I will need the dragons back. What events are you going to be at this week?

Milton Keynes on Saturday? Could also come Friday if that is better?

Friday would be better, I am unlikely to make the Saturday.
